WRTC uses public-key cryptography. No phone number, no email, no servers. Your messages can only be read by you and your recipient — not even us.
Getting Started
🔑
Your Recovery Phrase
Your 12-word seed phrase IS your identity. Save it — if you lose it, you lose your account permanently. There's no password reset.
🏷️
Claim a .wrtc Name
Instead of sharing a long address, claim a short name like steven.wrtc in Settings. Others can find you by name instead of address.
✏️
Start a Chat
Tap the pencil icon (top right) and enter a wmail:// address or .wrtc name. You can also tap a share link someone sent you — it opens the chat automatically.
Messaging
↪️
Swipe to Reply
Swipe right on any message to reply to it. The quoted message appears above your reply.
👆
Long Press a Message
Hold any message to open the action menu: react with emoji, reply, forward, star, edit (your own messages), copy, or delete.
✏️
Edit Messages
Long press one of your sent messages → tap Edit. Update the text and hit send. The message shows "edited" to both sides.
📤
Forward Messages
Long press any message → Forward → pick a conversation. The message is forwarded with a "Forwarded" label.
📎
Send Files & Images
Tap the paperclip icon to attach an image, video, PDF, or any file up to 50MB. Large files are uploaded in chunks automatically.
🎤

Managing Conversations
📌
Pin Conversations
Long press a conversation in the inbox → Pin. Pinned chats stay at the top of your list under a "📌 Pinned" section.
📦
Archive Conversations
Long press a conversation → Archive. Archived chats are hidden from the main list. Tap "Show Archived" at the bottom to see them.
🔇
Mute Conversations
Long press a conversation → Mute. Muted chats show 🔇 and don't show unread badges. You still receive messages.
🗑️
Delete Conversations
Swipe left on a conversation to reveal the delete button, or long press → Delete. This removes it from your device only.
🔖
Saved Messages
The "Saved Messages" thread at the top is your personal note-to-self. Use it to save links, reminders, or anything you want to keep.
Group Chats
👥
Create a Group
Tap the 👥 icon in the inbox header. Give the group a name, add members by address or pick from your contacts, then tap Create Group.
📨
Sending in a Group
Messages in a group are delivered to each member individually using end-to-end encryption. Each member sees who sent each message.
🤝
Joining a Group
If someone adds you to a group, you'll automatically be added when you receive the first message. A notification tells you the group name.
Voice & Video Calls
📞
Voice Call
Open a 1-on-1 chat and tap the phone icon (☎️) in the header. Calls are peer-to-peer over WebRTC — fully encrypted, no servers involved.
📹
Video Call
Open a 1-on-1 chat and tap the video icon (🎥) in the header. Works best on WiFi. Both parties see each other in real time.
Privacy & Security
👤
Contacts Only Mode
In Settings → Privacy, switch to "Contacts only" to only receive messages from people you've saved. Blocks strangers.
💾
Backup & Restore
In Settings → Backup & Restore, export your messages as a .wrtcbak file — includes all messages, contacts, voice messages, and attached files in a compressed archive. Import on any device to restore everything.
🔔 Notifications (iPhone)
Step 1: Open wrtc.app in Safari. Step 2: Tap the Share button (📤) → "Add to Home Screen" → Add. Step 3: Open the app from your Home Screen icon (not from Safari). Step 4: Go to Settings → tap 🔔 Enable Notifications and allow when prompted.
Requires iOS 16.4 or later. Notifications only work when launched from the Home Screen icon — not from the Safari browser tab. Once enabled, you'll receive notifications even when the app is closed.
🔗
Invite Someone
Settings → Invite Others → Copy or Share your personal invite link. Anyone who taps it opens a chat with you automatically.
🌐
Mesh Network
WRTC uses a self-healing mesh network. If the main server goes down, messages route through community relay nodes. You can run your own node from Settings → Run Your Own Node.
